Coming from a mom of two college grads, here’s my go-to list of dorm room essentials that make move-in day—and the whole first year—easier for both you and your student. Shop now using the links below!
Most college dorm rooms will not have air conditioning. Don't let your kid find that out the hard way! Prepare them with a fan that has good circulation (and a quiet motor). They will thank you later!
Will your child share a bathroom? Shower shoes are a must. These shower shoes are quick-drying and have built in drain holes!
Can you imagine wet towels, robes, or maybe even clothes all over the dorm? This collapsible drying rack can be easily folded up but will be there when your kid needs it.
Don't forget about cleaning. Find a vacuum that doesn't take up too much space like this lightweight, bagless vacuum ready to fit into any crevice in the dorm.
Picture this: It’s the first morning of college. Your child’s juggling shampoo, conditioner, a razor, soap, face wash, and a towel—half of it hitting the floor on the way to the communal bathroom. Skip the chaos. A shower caddy makes it so much easier.
Making the most of every space in a college dorm room is key. Hanger organizers can double the amount of space your child has in their closet. They don't need to limit the amount of clothes they are packing anymore!
Don't waste space with a bulky shoe rack at the dorm. Have your kid hang all their shoes neatly in the closet with this handy hanging shoe shelf!
Do you know how many outlets are in the average dorm room? Not nearly enough! I promise, your kid will need a power strip for their many chargers and appliances.
Mamas, for the first time maybe ever, your kids will be tackling their laundry--and sharing the machines with the whole building! Protect small items and delicates with these laundry bags!
You can never be too prepared. There is a fentanyl epidemic across U.S. college campuses. It could be in any drug. Even if you trust your kid to not experiment with drugs, anything could happen. It could save their life or even a friend's. Don't take a risk, send them with Narcan just in case.
Protect your kids from nights out. Drink tampering on college campuses is dangerous and more common than you think. Send them to school with this scrunchie that can protect their drink from being tampered with, and protect themselves from a dangerous situation.
Trust me--your kids won't be happy when they first sit on their new dorm bed. Keep them comfortable with a memory foam mattress topper. They aren't being dramatic about this one!
You're not ready for move-in unless you have vacuum seal bags at the ready. These bags will double the amount of clothing and linens your child can bring with them to school. Don't skip them!
Another trick to a successful college move-in is having the right bags! These heavy duty moving bags make it so much easier to transport, clothes, boxes, and supplies.
Your child needs to make use of every nook and cranny in their dorm room. The door is a great place for extra storage! This over door organizer makes room for any items your child needs an extra space for.
Not only will your child need a nightstand for extra storage and bedside items, having one with a charging station is a plus! There are very few outlets in dorm rooms so optimizing your charging options will make things easier for your child.
Will your child have their own bathroom? These suction shower caddies will make it easier for your child to organize their items and keep them separate from their suitemates.
